Contact Lenses

This is an exciting time for both contact lens wearers and their practitioners. Contact lenses are now available for nearly every type of prescription and in a variety of replacement options. A few of these lenses are listed below as examples. Many more are available in our office.

See our News and New Products page on this website for information about new releases and rebates.

Disposable or Frequent Replacement Lenses
The FDA defines disposable contact lenses as those used only a single time, however, contact lens wearers generally refer to lenses that are replaced from 2-4 week intervals, as disposable. They are available for virtually any refractive error correction. In addition to either nearsighted or farsighted prescriptions, disposable contacts are available in both astigmatic and bifocal corrections. A number of corrections are available to change eye color as well.

Single Use Lenses
This is probably the fastest growing segment of the contact lens industry. It actually refers to two distinctly different wearing schedules. The first is the daily disposable lens. Available for both near and farsighted correction, these lenses are worn for 1 day and then discarded; no solutions are required. They offer the ultimate in convenience and health for contact lens wearers. Our office strongly recommends this option for new contact lens wearers (especially young teens) as well as the occasional lens wearer. We carry a variety of daily disposable lenses including CIBA FocusDAILIES, Focus DAILIES TORIC and Proclear 1-day.

The second type of single use lenses are designed to be worn for 1 month of continuous wear and then discarded. These new silicon-hydrogel lenses offer significantly greater oxygen transmission than previously available extended wear lenses. They are presently available in most near and farsighted corrections. Drs. Tucker and Wieand often present this modality as an alternative to refractive surgery. The lenses in this category include CIBA Night and Day, Purevision, and Purevision Toric.

Rigid Lenses
Rigid gas permeable lenses (RGPs) are usually custom designed for each wearer and are available in virtually every prescription. RGPs are usually worn on a daily wear basis. However, there are now RGP lenses with FDA approval for extended wear as well. RGP lenses are noted for their crisp vision, simple lens maintenance regimen, and durability.

The new super oxygen permeable lenses are now being used to reshape the cornea while sleeping, so no contact or glasses wear is required during the day. For more information regarding this option, visit the orthokeratology page of our website.

Specialty Lenses
Extraordinary refractive error and/or condition of the cornea require specialty lenses. Custom designed soft lenses are now available for bifocal astigmatic corrections as well as those patients with large astigmatic prescriptions. Hybrid lenses, which combine soft and rigid lens materials, are available for crisp vision and good comfort. New materials and lens designs are available for patients with keratoconus as well as other causes of cornea irregularities. These lenses include the MV2 lens, the Synergeyes Premium and Synergeyes K lenses, the Lifestyle Toric Multifocal, the MVP lens, and several extended range lenses. Call our office for more details and/or an appointment.
